Stigmatochromis modestus is a cichlid which can be found all around the lake in rocky environments. This species is living in caves between the rocks. In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with young mbunas which are seeking shelter between the rocks but end up in the wrong caves where this modestus is living. So weīre dealing here with a predator. In an aquarium it is also necessary for them that there are a lot of hiding places. In the middle of 2013 I bought a nice young pair of this species which grew up to a couple of beautiful adult fish. From these fish the male was - at that time - about 16 cm and the female was about 12 cm. The head of the male had a beautiful darkblue color, he had an auburn body from which the edges of the scales also were blue so that there was always a blue glow over his body, furthermore he had nice red pectoral fins and a very beautiful red anal fin full with egg spots, on the other hand the female is completely brown. This pair behaved itself really peaceful in this tank, the whole day they were hiding between the rocks in this tank, only when it was feeding time they came out and showed themselves. Despite of that, it seemd that these fish didnīt feel really pretty in this tank in which were swimming a reasonable number of different fish so I sold them in the middle of 2015. I had no offspring of this species. Even though I think itīs a very nice species to keep. In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with young mbunas. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix etc. |
